• The thorax has a humped-back appearance
• Between the abdomen and the thorax, there is one bump or pedical
• There are large mandibles (jaws)
• The antennae are elbowed, instead of straight like termites
• They are usually black, but can also have some or a lot of red color
• They can be very large, however they can also be various sizes
