HANGING TERMITE MUD TUNNEL WITH PERSPECTIVE

This is a picture of a mud tunnel hanging from a floor joist in a basement. This can be one of the first signs of a termite infestation.

This type of mud tunnel occurs because the termites are trying to find a shorter way back to the colony, which is underground. They can build mud tunnels through mid-air for a short distance. If they are unsuccessful in reaching the ground, they abandon the attempt and find another way.

This image also show a six inch ruler held next to the tunnel. You will notice that this hanging mud tunnel is over 12 inches long. This is about as long as they generally get.
